The Italian mafia is laundering money through ENI Italy, who have a share in Gazprom, whereas Bulgarian, Greek and Turkish capital from organized crime is being invested in the pipeline Nabucco, informed FLARE (Freedom, Legality and Rights in Europe) President Michele Curto.
Yesterday he took part in a seminar on freedom of speech and fighting the mafia in Pazardjik, Bulgaria. Curto pointed out that Bulgaria marked a precedent in European history as the first member state to lose structural funds. He pointed out that Italian laws on confiscating mafia properties are the most efficient tool against organized crime. Italian society retook possession of properties worth billions, which the mafia owned. FLARE’s leader also informed of a trend in Italy – buying goods like spaghetti, olive oil, sweets and clothes produced in factories previously owned by the mafia. Mafia boss Toto Rina’s villa has become a real tourist attraction. It was converted to a hostel by the government and tourists can sleep in his bed and eat at his table. The game Confiscopolis has replaced Monopoly. Players get bonuses for every property confiscated from the mafia. This is a way of supporting the struggle against organized crime. FLARE did a study, showing that the mafia has changed a lot in recent years. Now it prefers to make money without murders, bombs, and kidnappings. FLARE unites over 50 European organizations committed to fighting human traffic, drug traffic, arms traffic and money laundering. It was founded by the Italian NGO Libera, in turn created after the high-profile killings of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
