The ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms launched its election campaign with a dire warning – ethnic conflict, presumably even scarier than swine flu.
What does the danger stem from? MRF leader Ahmed Dogan doesn’t say explicitly. Even without naming GERB and Boyko Borisov it is clear that they are the dark cloud on the horizon. The attack is twofold. Ethnic Turks will be put off by Borisov and the latter will get agitated to the extent of saying something stupid, which may ruin his rating. The insinuation is rather vile – a totalitarian and repressive regime is coming. Who will save us? It is obvious. It works every time. First you take out an effigy, and then you burn it in front of the crowd. Nobody has anything against Turks, of course. As a NATO and EU member all experiments with ethnic tension in Bulgaria are doomed to fail. The MRF knows that and rushes to sign up more Bulgarian members. GERB, on the other hand, should stay calm. Either way the MRF’s supporters won’t vote for Borisov. GERB would do well to clarify its MEPs’ planned policies, because they have great (and the most) candidates. One of them is Rumiana Zheleva, who is well-respected in Brussels and has always taken national interests to heart. But what happens if Borisov gives in and lends support to Dogan in the face of ethnic adversity? GERB and MRF – a bastion of ethnic peace, like the USSR and the Warsaw Pact were a purported bastion of world peace…it is not as absurd as it sounds. After all, the MRF has aligned itself with every coalition that ever ruled the country. The Bulgarian Socialist Party should keep that in mind. The MRF will get all the votes it plans to whether it campaigns or not, even more because Dogan controls a major part of the administration. The staff’s behaviour is a perfect example of Pavlovian conditioning.
