Bulgaria – the “tiger” of the seven seas
Today the government will decide whether to participate in the EU anti-piracy operation near the coasts of Somalia. Bulgaria may send two army officers to operation Atalanta.
If the proposal is accepted Bulgaria will become the sixth member state of the organization with standing representatives in this operation. The other five are Greece, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. Another three countries are expected to join. The operation aims to enhance the security of delivery of humanitarian aid such as food. The proposal also entails granting all Bulgarian army officers participating in missions abroad the right to additional remuneration for working under “specific” conditions. This is stipulated by the defense minister. Currently only officers in NATO’s operation Active Endeavor in the Mediterranean get extra pay. In related news, pirate hunting has become a tourist attraction. As Frognews.bg reported, a company has started offering safari near the Somalian coast. The organizers promise at least two pirate attacks during the trip. If not, you get half your money back. The ship will sail at 5 knots 12 miles away from the coast.
