“This is the first time that the Union has had so much trouble integrating a member state,” states the report, addressed to PM Stanishev. He received it today following a 6-month observation of Bulgarian institutions. The EU terms Bulgaria a “case”, which will help the Union in future challenges related to enlargement. The prime minister unaffectedly responded, “The EU has many cases with many countries and many countries are facing penalties over failing to apply directives.” He tried to appease the nation, assuring that Bulgaria has fewer problems than some older members.” The EU demands that senior officials suspected of corruption be fired immediately. Our endless court cases also face criticism. The EU recommends we create an independent agency for combating corruption.
