Brussels to cut aid to Bulgaria over waste management crisis
The government received a second critical letter from Brussels, which they are keeping secret.
EU experts criticize Cabinet’s bill on waste disposal in Sofia and the entire environmental program. The letter, which was sent to deputy PM Meglena Plugchieva, environment minister Djevdet Chakarov and finance minister Plamen Oresharsky, states that Brussels will cut aid under the Environment Operative program if the government adopts the bill. This will prove detrimental to all the projects in 23 Bulgarian regions. Experts add that “it is unacceptable to sign an agreement with the former concessionaire Novera for waste management in Sofia, because this would be in violation of the Public procurement act”.
