Will the political changes fuel such on the Bulgarian mediascape?

The massive failure of the former government and the great success of the former opposition lead to great expectations for change on the mediascape, especially as regards the leading media.

You don’t have to be familiar with the publications of Freedom House, Reporters without borders and Buzzdash to notice the deterioration of freedom of speech in recent years. 97% of those surveyed by Buzzdash believe that the Bulgarian media is corrupt. 1% did not comment, and 2% hold the minority opinion. There has never been such a nationwide consensus on any other issue. This situation tends to put off Brussels officials, whose decisions are of paramount importance to the Bulgarian economy. The situation served the incumbent government well, but the people voted it out. Who will “vote out” media corruption? Will we ever overcome or at least shed light on clandestine agreements, where media bosses “help” each other by refusing to hire disobedient journalists, fired from other editor’s offices? These bosses sold freedom of speech and breached the people’s trust. They are more than willing to shed their image of supporters of the former government by playing the victim of repression. Freedom is the answer. The more free media and reporters we have, the worse the traders of the authority of the fourth tier of power (media) will feel. The easiest way out is simply to replace inconvenient media bosses (privately owned media as well, the government has its tools). Otherwise it’s just buying loyalty. High-placed media servants are always ready to sell. The winner of these elections may take the easiest route to media comfort. I can only recommend that they avoid cooperating with discredited media bosses and “stars” who are more than happy to replace their pentagrams with coats of arms (the acronym GERB means “coat of arms” in Bulgarian). The people voted for change and won’t be forgiving if it doesn’t occur in the sector, focused on by the former Cabinet. The former government deceived itself into believing that they cheated the “fools” once at elections and again and again through the TV for 4 years. They are now punished by the voters, the “suckers” in outgoing PM Stanishev’s own words. The mediascape needs a change, but it won’t happen the easy way. Voters are no fools. They elected people to solve the complicated problems in the country. I hate to think what would happen if they find themselves fooled again.
