Bulgaria facing East
To be or not to be – in the EU?
Bulgaria is historically torn between Moscow and Western Europe, the International Consultative Council writes in a report.
Failure on the government’s part to tackle crime and corruption may push Bulgaria in the sphere of Russian influence, the report states. It was quoted by Reuters and requested by the Bulgarian government prior to general elections on July 5. “Bulgaria maintains close ties with Russia, especially in the energy sector,” Reuters writes. The differences between the EU and Bulgaria (and Romania) will be described in the European Commission’s report, which will be out on Wednesday. “These two countries are the only ones covered in reports with the aim to further and stimulate reforms,” Reuters added. The ICC was established in November last year. It is headed by Dominique de Villepin, former prime minister of France. Members include a former minister, former EC commissioner, member of the European Audit Office, rector and judicial adviser. Its aim is to help Bulgaria use the opportunities granted by the EU and apply top-notch European practices.
