Socialist party claims sharp opposition to ex-state security agent ban

The Bulgarian Socialist Party will seek the help of the Constitutional Court and of persons in the president’s quota to topple the ban on former state security agents leading parliamentary committees.
The parliamentary group of the socialist Coalition for Bulgaria will take its case against the stipulations within the newly voted regulations of Parliament activity to the Constitutional Court, BSP spokeswoman Kornelia Ninova informed. The socialists will seek allies from other parliamentary groups against what they see as anti-constitutional measures violating the rights of MPs, who cooperated with the secret services in communist times. They will become familiar with the bill, drafted by the right-wing Blue Coalition. The 41st National Assembly started work with the decision that ex-state security agents and affiliates would not be allowed to lead key parliamentary committees such as budget and finance, domestic security, EU aid appropriation, armed forces, anti-corruption, the committee on supervision of the NSA, etc. Due to this the historian Prof. Bozhidar Dimitrov, who was elected deputy of GERB’s quota, was not allowed to head the parliamentary committee on cultural issues. Instead he was appointed minister without portfolio in Boyko Borisov’s Cabinet. Methodius Andreev, former chairman of the committee on access to classified files, discerned a hidden agenda underlying the BSP’s intentions to seek help from the Constitutional Court. He defined the CC as a “political organ” entirely dependent on the former governing majority and the president. He finds that the CC’s members were appointed in result of a party quota distribution agreement, which is why we can expect the court to support the socialists. He reminded that ex-interior minister Georgi Petkanov, who has repeatedly opposed the opening of the classified files, is currently a member of the CC.
