Finance minister Simeon Djankov described the tax reforms proposed by President Georgi Parvanov and drafted by the Economics Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as “idiotic”.
“The idea is idiotic,” said the minister regarding the notion of removing flat tax. The recommendation to establish BGN 1000 as tax-free minimum also didn’t suit his taste. This is simply unthinkable, Djankov said. He made the sarcastic recommendation to levy a very low VAT rate on books in French to stimulate Bulgarians to brush up on their French and no VAT on Russian books. “I wonder why they didn’t propose it,” he said. The minister thinks flat tax is an institution in Bulgaria and shouldn’t be touched. He also criticized the president’s decision to summon the Consultation Council on National Security today. He thinks this should have been done in the summer of last year. “This session is around 15 months overdue,” he insisted.
