Interview by Elizabeth Georgieva
Q: Mr. Georgiev, what is the biggest problem of the Bulgarian political system?
A: The main problem is the crisis with lack of representation. There are hundreds of thousands unrepresented left-wing voters and right-wing voters…I don’t see how mandatory voting will solve this. They still won’t have anyone to vote for.
Q: If mandatory voting were introduced, wouldn’t these people have motivation to find someone to vote for?
A: Definitely not. One of several things can happen. There will be plenty of empty ballots. There is no way to control or “forbid” this, and that is how people will react. If there were a ballot against everybody, it would be the most popular. There were such in Russia, but with other political aims. Some people might vote randomly, as if they were playing the lottery. Is this a conscious political choice?
Q: How can we overcome the representation crisis?
A: It wouldn’t be easy. A step in this direction would be a return to serious policy-making, to responsible politics, a return to creating a political product and its realization in government.
Q: Which voting system is most suitable considering the Bulgarian attitude?
A: There is no typical Bulgarian attitude in this sense. The problem is that Bulgarians as a whole exist less and less – the cultural and economic gaps in our society are huge. There is no universal decision.прочетете още...
