“Bulgarians drown in futility and hopelessness because bandits have the last word”
“Let’s be frank - Bulgarians drown in futility and hopelessness because bandits have the last word”. This is the opening line of German investigative reporter Jurgen Roth’s book. He mainly treats the connections between politics and organized crime, which have been developing over the past two decades.
He writes about the dark shadow of the communist-era State Security, which still lingers over politics, economy and society. The characters in his book are infamous – “another great hope” Boyko Borisov, the mayor of Bulgaria’s cash machine capital, Rumen “The Wolf” Gaitanski and his “renewed” career, ex-minister Rumen Petkov and his “contacts”, the clandestine group TIM, “a dangerous politician” Ahmed Dogan, Michael Chernoy and his “Bulgarian period”, former State Security and Communist Party officials and their lion’s share of the pie after the fall of communism, the connections bеtween the Bulgarian government and a “run-of-the-mill energy giant”) - Gazprom ( a topic of great interest lately) and more. Roth not only writes about the problems, he tries to find the causes. He finds them in the “chaotic rule of intertwined political, economic and criminal circles, which have the support of the secret services and are not even ashamed of their past and the way they work.”
